The end of one year and the start of a new one is always a time for people to get the crystal ball out and make some predictions for the 12 months ahead.
However, unlike in areas like fashion or interior design, there may be more reason to take tech trends seriously, as they build on existing innovations and anything on the way for 2025 will have had much development work done on it already.
Apart from the question of what is coming, there is also the issue of what may be relevant to people like home workers and also what kind of IT support may be needed.
Smart tech installations are among the areas to look out for and, according to Today in Tech, the big clues will come in mid-January when the Consumer Electronics Show takes place over in Las Vegas. Much remains to be revealed, some of which may have more direct relevance to IT than Hisense innovations in fridges, washing machines and air conditioners.
Other areas of interest have been highlighted by Technology Magazine. For instance, hybrid computing – which combines the public and private cloud – has been suggested as one big area, with IBM and Microsoft active in this area.
When it comes to IT support, however, this is the sort of thing you would only be set up with once it is established and shown to work, not when it is still an experimental technology with many potential flaws that may compromise your data storage.
Security will remain a big issue and postquantum cryptography has been tipped to emerge as a means of taking security to the next level, since the capacity of quantum computers to overcome conventional cryptography will soon be reached. Something even more complex and sophisticated will therefore be required.
That development may not define the kind of security you use in 2025, either in smart tech in the home or in your laptop. But the year ahead will certainly see developments taking place that reflect an arms race between the IT security sector and the crooks.
One thing is certain: In 2025, your need for IT support will certainly not diminish.
